PORT EVERGLADES INLET, CULVERT

AND CANAL RESTORATION

SCEC, in partnership with Ebsary Foundation Co., completed repairs to the Florida Power & Light (FPL) inlet canal at Port Everglades. The inlet structure stabilization project included restoration of canal banks and repairs of discharge culvert piping that feeds FPL's Port Everglades Plant in Fort Lauderdale.

Steel sheet piling was installed into hard limestone, with great care to protect manatees and other species inhabiting the canal. The highly technical installation called for the pile to be cut off underwater by divers to a specified grade, followed by a massive concrete pour to seal the canal bottom to prevent erosion. SCEC was responsible for all underwater construction and employed certified industrial divers experienced in marine construction to ensure the team safely met the tight schedule.
