SCEC recently completed the Sawgrass Expressway Small Ramp SunPass Conversion Project 76 days ahead of schedule. As a result, SCEC earned the maximum early completion bonus on this $14-million project for the Florida Department of Transportation.

The Design-Build project involved the modification of existing nonstaffed single-lane toll plazas at eight locations along the Sawgrass Expressway in Broward County. The ramp improvements included the addition of SunPass-Only lanes and the associated pavement widening, as well as the construction of SunPass equipment buildings at all locations.

New gantry structures were designed and constructed for gantry-mounted SunPass equipment at each tolling location. The existing roadway lighting, signage, and pavement markings were modified at each interchange, and new landscape was added at each toll plaza as well.

SCEC partnered with ACAI Associates, Inc., and Keith and Schnars, P.A., on this successful Design-Build project.

Delivering the Sawgrass project early and safely helped SCEC earn a high Contractor Performance Rating of 103, out of a total 108, from the FDOT. More than 90 percent of SCEC's civil work is with the FDOT, and the FDOT consistently awards SCEC outstanding Contractor Performance Ratings.
